Try these for a lifetime of healthy smiles

When it comes to ensuring a healthy mouth, brushing is just the beginning. There are lots of other ways to ensure you have a good oral health. You can really make a difference by trying just two or more of the healthy habits we've suggested here. The more of them you can regularly maintain the better your chances of achieving a healthy smile that will last a lifetime.

Brushing

Brushing

Brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste helps remove plaque which can lead to tooth decay and gum problems. Proper brushing should take about two minutes using short gentle strokes. Finish by brushing your tongue as well.

A soft bristled brush with a small head is recommended as it can reach more areas of the mouth. Alternatively, a power toothbrush can also be an option if you prefer. Whatever you use, it's important to replace your toothbrush when it begins to show wear or at least every three months. It's also good to replace your toothbrush after you've had a cold and to store your brush in a clean dry place, to avoid the build-up of hidden germs and bacteria.

Flossing

Flossing

Daily flossing will clean between the teeth where your toothbrush can't reach. Flossing can help to keep your breath fresh. Floss at least once a day, preferably at night.

Be sure to clean beneath the gum line, but avoid snapping the floss on the gums. Use clean sections of floss as you move from tooth to tooth.

Rinse and Mouthwash

Rinse and Mouthwash

Rinsing regularly with a mouthwash as advised for adults and children over 10 is another great way to help fight plaque forming and guard against the build-up of bacteria. Using Mouthwash can help protect gums, and is a great way to get rid the mouth of the bacteria loosened during flossing. Plus it gives you a cleaner and fresher mouth.

There are many different types and flavours available-ask your dentist which one is best for your teeth and gums.

Visit the Dentist

Visit the Dentist

Visit your dentist regularly to check your mouth for signs of disease. Early detection of problems means they can be treated more easily and effectively.

During a visit, your dentist can thoroughly clean your teeth. They can also clean below the gum line to remove build-up of plaque and tartar that can cause gum disease, cavities, bad breath and other problems.
